A couple of links to counter the state of the union.
State of the Union, Sliced and Diced
The True State of the Union
I've been reading a couple of books. The first, I actually restarted one I was reading over the holidays as I forgot about it once I got back, The Dogs of Babel I picked this up mainly becasue it has a dog as a major character, and it's pretty good. I got back to the point where I left off this weekend, about half-way, and having read it twice, I can say the first half is excellent.
The other, a book I've known about for a while, but only picked it up when I noticed it on the sale table at Borders when I went in during lunch the other day. The Know-it-all which is about the authors expeirience of reading the Encyclopedia Brittanica. The complete Encyclopedia Brittanica, all 30-some volumes from cover to cover. (Remember the EB is made up of a micropedia and a macropedia, so there's more than 26 volumes. It's got a lot of intersting trivia, and is pretty funny. I'm somewhere in the D's, so I got a ways to go with this book yet.
I watched 3 movies this weekend - Miller's Crossing written and directed by the Coen brothers. Not as good as the great Coen brothers movies, but it was interesting as it is one of the few of their movies I haven't seen. (I'm not sure where meta-critics boundry is for yellow/green, but I'd put in the low green/high yellow range.)
Requiem for a dream. I had forgotten how much I liked this movie. It's really well done, with the story, acting, look, and soundtrack all working perfectly together. I'd give it a score in the mid 90's, but urge you to figure out if this is the movie for you before renting it based on my recommendation, because there's no in-between with this movie, you'll either love it or hate it.
And I saw Capote in the theater today that's showing all the leading Oscar contenders that aren't still playing in other theatres. It was really good - debating about whether or not I should read In Cold Blood now. (The movie is about the writing of that book)
I forogot to mention I saw Walk the Line last weekend. That's enough for now. Also feel free to leave comments.
